Description
Mega science projects connects to industry
Scientific projects initiated by institutes from the Northern part of the Netherlands are estimated to be more than 100 M€ of value. These project leads to significant opportunities for Dutch industries. It is essential for having the right knowledge developed before procurement of the contracts for roll-out of the large science projects are initiated.
Potential business opportunities and role for Dutch industry:
The experience from the LOFAR project brings with it unique strengths in the areas of information and communication receiver technology. This includes advanced electronics systems design, electronic components/integrated circuits, high-speed data processing hard- and software, system health monitoring, sophisticated electronic manufacturing services (EMS) and the development of sustainable energy friendly systems as well.
Early engagement of Dutch industries will bring them a competitive position when a roll-out phase is initiated.
Industries have to invest on developing new knowledge needed for these projects. This knowledge is fully aligned with major future applications/technology trends for a sustainable society.
Scientific institutes who have large infrastructural projects originated of are planning to do are:
- KVI (the international institute for atomic and subatomic physics)
- NOVA ( Nederlandse Onderzoekschool voor Astronomie)
- SRON Netherlands institute for Space Research
- ASTRON Netherlands institute for radio astronomy
During the INCSU event, representatives of these institutes will give some insights about their plans and how to connect industries to these projects. One of the approaches will be an open innovation model. In this model it is envisaged to build several industrial consortia. These consortia will have to invest in the development of required know-how.
During the INCSU-event, these projects are introduced.:
- SAFARI IR space camera: cryogenic testfacilites using mechatronics and optics
- ELT European Extrema Large Telescope
- ZFEL: the nano world in action )
- SKA, the Square Kilometer array, a mega distributed interferometer radio sensor which encompasses high performance computing, radio/antenna systems and embedded computing as well.
